Every great story starts somewhere. Ours began in 1935 with a group of educators, a shared vision, and a simple belief that people are stronger when they help one another.
In Middletown, Connecticut, a small group of teachers came together to make a real difference in their lives and the lives of their colleagues. By pooling their resources, they could offer affordable loans, financial support, and a helping hand when it mattered most. That December, Northern Middlesex School Employees Credit Union was officially chartered. And just like that, our story began.
What started as a small credit union for educators quickly grew into something much bigger. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, we expanded to serve schools across Middlesex County and Connecticut's shoreline communities. In 1959, we became Middlesex Schools Federal Credit Union, a name that reflected our growing membership and commitment to helping more people achieve financial well-being.
As our members' lives evolved, so did we. From basic savings accounts and small loans to a growing range of financial products and services, we continued finding new ways to make managing money easier and more accessible.
In 2005, another exciting chapter began when we merged with Meriden Municipal Federal Credit Union, welcoming more than 2,000 new members and expanding our ability to serve the communities around us.
By 2006, we had grown well beyond our original roots in education. Our membership was more diverse, our communities had expanded, and it was time for a name that reflected who we had become. So, we asked the people who knew us best: our members, employees, and Board of Directors. With more than 800 name suggestions, Seasons Federal Credit Union was born.
The name represented something we believed deeply: life is full of changes, challenges, milestones, and new beginnings. And through every season, people deserve a financial partner they can count on.
For nearly two decades, Seasons continued to grow, evolve, and support members through life's many moments. But our story wasn't finished. Not even close.
A New Name. A Bigger Purpose.
As we looked toward the future, we started asking ourselves some important questions. How could we make an even greater impact? How could we break down barriers to financial confidence and independence? And how could we create a financial institution where more people feel seen, supported, and empowered?
We recognized an opportunity to do more than offer great financial products and services. We could help address real financial challenges, champion underserved communities, and create meaningful opportunities for people to thrive.
In April 2025, Seasons Federal Credit Union proudly became Ellafi Federal Credit Union.
Our new name represents more than a fresh look. It reflects a renewed mission and a commitment to making a meaningful difference.
Ella means "she" in many languages, while FI stands for Financial Institution. Together, Ellafi represents our commitment to empowering women+ and those who support them.
Why women+? Because we believe financial empowerment can change lives. And while financial challenges affect everyone, women often face unique obstacles on their journeys toward financial independence. We're here to help change that.
Our mission is to Empower and Lead women+ with the goal to Lift economic resilience and help women, and their allies, Achieve Financial Independence. It's the lens through which we approach everything we do, from the financial products and resources we offer to the education, partnerships, and community initiatives we support.
And while our mission puts women+ at the center, everyone is welcome at Ellafi. We believe that when we lift one another up, we all move forward.
Our Story Is Still Being Written
Today, Ellafi is guided by the same people-helping-people philosophy that brought those Middletown educators together back in 1935. Only now, our vision is bigger.
We're embracing innovation, creating opportunities, strengthening communities, and helping people build healthier relationships with their money. We're proud of where we started, inspired by how far we've come, and even more excited about what's ahead.
Because at Ellafi, financial well-being is about more than dollars and cents. It's about confidence, independence, opportunity, and having the support to create the life you want.
