Every year on October 11, the global community celebrates International Day of the Girl — a time to recognize the power, resilience, and potential of girls everywhere. This year’s theme, “The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis,” shines a light on the critical role girls play in shaping a better, more equitable world.

At Ellafi Federal Credit Union, we believe that when girls are supported, entire communities grow stronger. Yet, around the world, too many girls still face barriers that limit their choices and futures — from lack of access to education to inequality in health care and financial resources.

Empowering girls isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s an investment in a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.

Here are six meaningful ways you can make a difference:
1. Encourage the Girls Around You

Representation matters. Share stories, books, movies, and art that show girls in powerful, diverse, and non-traditional roles. Encourage them to lead — in school, at home, and in their communities. Help them question stereotypes and imagine what’s possible beyond the limits society sets.

2. Mentor a Girl

Whether through programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Girls Inc., or Girl Scouts, mentorship creates lasting impact. Be a role model who listens, guides, and inspires confidence. Sometimes, all it takes is one person believing in a girl’s potential to change her entire future.

3. Support New Moms

The journey to empowering girls starts with supporting mothers. The first 1,000 days of a child’s life are the most crucial for development. Consider donating essentials like diapers or meals to new moms, or supporting organizations such as Every Mother Counts. A little help can go a long way.

4. Let Women Know You Care

From teachers and mentors to sisters and friends — express gratitude and encouragement. Speak up against bias or harassment when you see it. Celebrate women’s successes publicly. When we lift one another up, we create a culture of belonging and empowerment.

5. Invest in Women and Girls

Whether it’s a girl with a lemonade stand or a woman entrepreneur building her dream, your support matters. Shop from women-owned businesses, contribute to microloans for women in developing countries, or invest in local organizations that uplift girls.

6. Use Your Voice

Advocate for policies that help girls access education, healthcare, and safe environments. Girls who complete secondary education are more likely to build healthy, stable, and successful lives. Speak up, sign petitions, or support nonprofits driving change globally — your voice carries power.

Together, We Create Change

Supporting girls means celebrating their achievements and building pathways for them to thrive. Whether through mentorship, advocacy, or simple acts of kindness, every action counts.

Let’s come together to inspire, educate, and empower today’s girls — because when girls rise, we all rise.
