Growing Up with Ellafi: Jessica’s Perspective
Jessica H. has been banking with Ellafi Federal Credit Union since she got her first job. More than a decade later, the credit union remains her primary financial institution.
"I opened my account when I was in high school," says Jessica. "Middletown High School had a Seasons branch right in the school, so it was easy to start banking there.”
Over the years, Jessica has used a variety of Ellafi’s services, including checking and savings accounts, a health savings account, a certificate of deposit (CD), and her first car loan.
"It's been nice having everything in one place," she says. "You know where everything is, you trust the institution, and you can manage it all through one app and one organization.”
A second-grade teacher in Bristol who still lives in Middletown, Jessica appreciates the accessibility and local connections that come with membership in a community-based credit union.
"Even though so much banking happens online now, it's reassuring to know there are real people you can call or meet with when you have questions," she says.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jessica remembers preparing for a major financial milestone early in her teaching career — buying her first car.
Buying a car and taking out a loan felt like a huge step. A family member recommended someone at Ellafi who had helped them, and the process was incredibly smooth. Having a trusted person to talk to made me feel comfortable and confident.
Today, that loan is fully paid off, but Jessica still recalls how important that support was at the time.
"It was a pivotal moment in my early adulthood," she says. "The experience was simple, straightforward, and positive.”
Jessica's connection to Ellafi extends beyond her own accounts. Many members of her family, including her parents, sister, husband, and extended relatives, also bank with the credit union.
"I think that's a reflection of how trusted Ellafi is in this community," she says. "My parents were already members when I opened my first account, and it just made sense.”
As an educator, Jessica also recognizes the importance of financial literacy. While schools introduce basic money concepts, she believes many young people still have questions about banking, saving, and managing finances as they enter adulthood.
"When I received money from a grandparent, I wasn't sure what to do with it," she says. " I was able to sit down with someone at Ellafi, ask questions, and learn about my options. Having a place where you feel comfortable asking those questions is really valuable.”
Looking back, Jessica sees Ellafi as more than a place to keep her money. From opening her first account as a teenager to financing a car and managing multiple accounts as an adult, the credit union has been a steady part of her financial journey.

Financial decisions can feel overwhelming when you're first starting out. Having people you trust and can turn to for guidance makes a difference. That's something I've appreciated about Ellafi throughout the years.
Today, Jessica continues to rely on Ellafi for her banking needs and values the combination of local service, accessibility, and personal support. It's a relationship that began in high school and has continued to evolve alongside her own financial goals and milestones.
