Ellafi Credit Union is proud to announce that CEO Robyn Swanson has earned her Credit Union Development Educator (CUDE) designation through the National Credit Union Foundation's renowned Development Education (DE) Program.
Robyn was among 52 credit union leaders from across the United States selected to participate in the June 2026 DE class, an immersive week-long leadership experience held at TruStage headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin. The program brings together professionals from across the credit union movement to strengthen leadership skills, deepen their understanding of cooperative principles, and explore innovative ways to improve financial well-being within their communities.
The Development Education Program is recognized throughout the industry as one of the premier leadership experiences for credit union professionals. Through collaborative learning, experiential activities, and community service, participants gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing communities and the unique role credit unions can play in addressing them.
For Robyn, the experience was both professionally and personally impactful:
My biggest takeaway from CUDE was the importance of revisiting the cooperative principles that are the foundation of the credit union movement. We talk a lot about members, but CUDE was a powerful reminder that our members are not customers. They are owners. That distinction matters because it changes the way we approach our work, the decisions we make, and how we define success.
The training focused heavily on understanding the development issues facing our communities and recognizing the role credit unions can play in helping address them. Whether it's housing, education, food insecurity, transportation, access to credit, or other barriers that impact financial well-being, credit unions are uniquely positioned to be part of the solution. We have an opportunity to improve not only the lives of our members, but also the communities where they live and work.
After nearly 30 years in the credit union movement, I can honestly say this was one of the most rewarding training experiences I've had. It was a bucket-filling week that came at exactly the right time as I recently took over the helm at Ellafi. It reinforced for me that our mission is not just something we put on a website or hang on a wall. It is a real opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. CUDE left me energized, inspired, and even more confident that Ellafi is well positioned to create lasting impact for our members and our community.
As part of the DE program, participants volunteered with local organizations focused on food security and community support, putting the credit union philosophy of "People Helping People" into action. These experiences reinforced the connection between financial well-being and community development, demonstrating how credit unions can serve as catalysts for positive change.
Robyn now joins a distinguished network of more than 3,400 Credit Union Development Educators from 35 countries who have completed the program since its inception in 1982. The designation reflects a commitment to servant leadership, lifelong learning, and advancing the mission of the credit union movement.
Robyn's achievement comes at an exciting time for Ellafi as the organization continues its mission of empowering women and those who support them through financial wellness, education, and community impact. The insights and relationships gained through the DE Program will help strengthen Ellafi's efforts to create meaningful opportunities for members and the communities it serves.
Please join us in congratulating Robyn on this outstanding accomplishment and her continued dedication to making a difference in the lives of our members and our community.
