In 1935, a small group of educators in Middletown, Connecticut, came together to create something extraordinary. Inspired by the credit union philosophy of “people helping people,” these teachers pooled their resources to form what would become the foundation of Ellafi Federal Credit Union. Their goal was simple yet profound: to provide low-cost loans and financial support to their colleagues during challenging times. In December of that year, the Northern Middlesex School Employees Credit Union was officially chartered, embodying a spirit of community and cooperation that continues to guide us today.
As the years unfolded, the credit union grew alongside its members. During the 1940s and 1950s, its reach expanded to serve schools in shoreline towns and across Middlesex County. Recognizing this broader scope, the credit union changed its name in 1959 to Middlesex Schools Federal Credit Union, a new identity that reflected the growing network of educators and school employees who relied on the credit union as a trusted financial partner.
From its earliest days of offering basic share savings and small loans, the credit union evolved to meet the changing needs of its members. Over time, it broadened its services to include a full spectrum of financial products and solutions.
A significant chapter in our story unfolded in 2005 when we merged with Meriden Municipal Federal Credit Union, welcoming over 2,000 new members into our family. This merger marked a new era of growth and collaboration, expanding our reach and strengthening our commitment to the communities we serve.
By 2006, it was clear that the name "Middlesex Schools Federal Credit Union" no longer reflected the diverse membership and expanded geography of our organization. We launched a naming campaign, inviting input from our members, staff, and Board of Directors. With over 800 name submissions, we ultimately became Seasons Federal Credit Union, a name symbolizing our promise to support members through every season of life—offering guidance, compassion, and trusted financial solutions.
Yet as the world continued to change, so too did our members’ needs and our desire to serve in deeper, more meaningful ways. We saw the opportunity to lead with purpose—to create a space where financial empowerment and belonging are at the center of everything we do. After extensive research, reflection, and engagement with our members and community, a bold new vision emerged.
In 2025, we proudly became Ellafi Federal Credit Union.
The name Ellafi is rooted in purpose and identity. "Ella" means “she” in many languages, and “FI” stands for Financial Institution. Together, Ellafi represents a financial institution designed to champion women+ and those who support them—providing tools, resources, and support for every financial journey, and building a community of strength, resilience, and growth.
Today, Ellafi Federal Credit Union serves more than 16,000 members across Connecticut and beyond. We honor our legacy while boldly stepping into the future—one built on service, equity, innovation, and connection.
